Senior Civil/Mechanical Engineer

RLC Engineering is seeking a Senior Civil/Mechanical Engineer to join their team of professionals.

This position performs a substantial role in the civil/mechanical and structural engineering design related to utility and power generation projects such as substations and transmission lines and interfaces directly with clients to establish new projects and to develop proposals in response to requests for work.  The design work will consist of a broad range of civil, structural and site design tasks. The incumbent must be competent to independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering design techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications to align with specific project goals and requirements. The incumbent must also possess an understanding of both basic and complex structural calculation methodologies, terminologies, and computational techniques required in design studies. This position may also direct the work of others or develop assignments with clear and specific objectives.  This individual requires low levels of assistance, self-guided in solving problems and capable of handling unusual problems.  This individual also demonstrates ability to review work with professional judgment and appropriate quality controls.  May supervise or coordinate the work of drafters, designers or technicians.


  • Perform structural design and analysis of steel structures and concrete foundations, site grading and design, and hydrologic modeling.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply industry standards used to design substations and transmission lines. In addition, work may require drawing reviews, quantity calculations, preparation of specifications, site inspections, and other related engineering duties.
  • Ability to support preliminary and conceptual engineering or final engineering and final plan production for construction.
  • Basic understanding of CADD process and tools used for production of preliminary and final design drawings and documentation.
  • Participate in the review of client Requests for Proposal and contribute to the completion of competitive project proposals and bid responses.
  • Ability to work independently and with others while maintaining a high level of initiative and self-motivation.
  • Ability to independently develop proposals including a scope of work that details the established goals and objectives and clearly defines the deliverables and schedule of work to be performed.
  • Participates in marketing to clients and of projects and identifying new and maintaining existing client relationships.
  • In addition to performing design duties, this individual will have an opportunity to lead certain project tasks and oversee the work performed by other staff members.

  • Keep supervision informed of status of all projects relative to pre-established expectations.

Other Functions of Position

  • Serve on industry committees and associations as appropriate where potential client’s network.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate within the organization and outside with clients.
  • Must have good PC skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


  • A Bachelor of Science in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or Technology degree from an ABET accredited engineering school.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience with employment in engineering work at a professional level.
  • Capability of managing small projects or tasks on larger scale projects and ability to mentor lesser experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Professional Engineering License preferred.
