Senior Distribution Power System Engineer

RLC Engineering is seeking a Senior Distribution Power System Engineer to join our team of professionals. This position performs a substantial role in power system analysis and study work and interfaces directly with clients to establish new projects and to develop proposals in response to requests for work.  The incumbent must be competent to operate various power system software tools required for performing power system engineering studies.  The incumbent must also be capable of manipulating power system databases and establishing base cases for load flow and time domain modeling in distribution planning.  The incumbent must also possess an understanding of both basic and complex power system calculation methodologies, terminologies, and techniques.

This position may also direct the work of others or develop assignments with clear and specific objectives.  This individual requires low levels of assistance, self-guidance in solving problems and the capability to handle unusual problems.  This individual also demonstrates ability to review work with professional judgment and appropriate quality controls.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead certain project tasks and oversee the work performed by other staff members in addition to performing power system study duties.
  • Perform power system engineering studies using standard software tools such as CYME, PSS/E, PSCAD and ASPEN. Areas of analysis will include effective grounding, short circuit, thermal and voltage assessment, flicker and tap analysis, loading, protection, risk of islanding, and temporary overvoltage analyses.
  • Comprehend and demonstrate a good working knowledge of power system planning, design and operation.
  • Prepare and review written reports which explain the purpose, methodology, data requirements, recommendations and observations of power system engineering studies.
  • Analyze results and develop conclusions on power system problems.
  • Maintain a program of personal study to expand and improve technical and analytical skills.
  • Work independently and with others while maintaining a high level of initiative and self-motivation.
  • Independently develop proposals including a scope of work that details the established goals and objectives and clearly defines the deliverables and schedule of work to be performed.
  • Participate and engage in marketing to clients for new work and identifying new and maintaining existing client relationships.
  • Maintain a program of personal study to expand and improve technical and analytical skills.
  • Keep department manager informed of status of all projects relative to pre-established expectations.
  • Serve on industry committees and associations as appropriate where potential clients network.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree from an ABET accredited engineering school.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience with employment in engineering work at a professional level.
  • Capability of managing small projects or tasks on larger scale projects and ability to mentor lesser experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Professional Engineering License preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate both within the organization and with outside clients.
  • Must have good PC skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.
