The client installed a new substation in Farmington, Maine as the result of a private developer’s new solar farm. The new substation was installed adjacent to the existing substation, which resulted in the existing 115 kV line being split into two lines, with a short section of line being relocated to enter the new substation. The area between the new and old substations had to be utilized for multiple purposes, including access and distribution lines, requiring significant coordination between the substation design firm and the transmission design team.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

• Determined new alignments for lines into new substation.
• Developed PLS-CADD model to determine structure types, sizes, and heights.
• Worked with steel pole manufacturer on the design of multiple custom steel poles on foundation.
• Designed caisson foundations for structure located inside the substation and in areas where guying wasn’t feasible.
• Created a construction sequence plan to support contractor with outage planning.
• Developed construction package for bid and construction purposes, including material lists, sag charts, and make-ready work.
• Provided construction support to client and contractor.
• Completed as-built drawings for client records.
